JACKSON

I can only try and do what I think is best for so long. When a woman like Rebecca asks me to share a bottle of gin with her, I am not going to say no. I simply can’t. The way that I want her is absolutely unreal. I attempt to calm myself down while waiting for her in the car, but fail. I hate to admit it, but the fact that she is my rival’s daughter offers an extra layer of hotness to her. I have always been a fan of the forbidden, and old habits are very hard to break. But I am determined to be as much of a gentleman as humanly possible. One thing I know for sure is I never want to see that panicked look on her face ever again. So, the ball is going to be in her court. This night is going to go however she wants it to. But I am surely hoping that she has the same plans in mind that I do.

Rebecca exits the shop casually and then basically rushes to my car and quickly gets inside. Taking a cue from that, I drive away fast.

“How far away is your cabin?” she asks tentatively. “I can’t be too long.”

“About twenty minutes from here. But I know a place, if you want to be closer to the village.”

“That . . . that might be best,” she says, looking at her lap. It makes me nervous that she is retreating into herself again. She’d told me that that she was scared before but not in the way that I was thinking. I drive us up to a hill, that has a great view of the village. It’s alright during the day, but I love it here at night. Staring down at the lights of a small village is so different than looking at a lit city skyline, The lights are more unevenly dispersed and it looks more natural. It’s like a few stars have fallen to the earth and made a home there. We get out of the car and sit on the hood, taking in the view for a few minutes.

“I have never been up here before,” Rebecca says after a beat. “It’s so beautiful.”

“Right? I love it up here, it’s great,” I chime in. “What’s not as great is that we have nothing to mix the gin with.”

“I don’t mind it straight.” She shrugs.

“It is also warm though,” I say slowly.

“I mean, that’s fine. . . . Right?” she asks, her eyes darkening with concern when I lift an inquisitive eyebrow.

“Have you ever had room-temperature gin before?”

She shakes her head.

“Oh. . . .”

“Oh, come on, it can’t be that bad,” she says with a dismissive puff of air and grabs the bottle from me. She unscrews the top and takes a big swig. Her face twists in agony and she starts coughing.

“Can’t say I didn’t warn you.” I try to stifle a laugh, but let it out once I realize that she is giggling in-between coughs as well.
